Eating Meat Responsibly

If you’re the omnivorous type, check out this article from MSN Health: Grass is Greener - Steak Without the Guilt. I’m all for more ethical, environmentally responsible and healthy alternatives to traditional Western consumption habits, and this is a great article filled with a tonne of information on just how and why.

But let’s face it: For a lot of people, biting into a thick, juicy steak ranks up there with make-up sex and cocktails on the company’s dime as one of those priceless MasterCard moments. So what’s a carnivore with a conscience to do? Instead of focusing on what you’re eating, how about taking a look at what your prime rib had for lunch last week?

Research is showing that beef from grass-fed cattle is leaner, healthier, and less costly to the planet — and may even be safer to eat than the heifers you’re chewing on now.

Truly a recommended read for anyone who doesn’t want to give up meat. I know that not everyone is willing to go vegan, but we all have a responsibility to work toward conserving our planet and making it a better place to live for all of its inhabitants.

P.S. Go vegan.

I’ve had some time to think about my response to one of your previous posts (Veganically Grown Food), and decided to post it here since I wasn’t sure if it would go by unnoticed by you.
As it were, I like reading your health conscience posts, because it appears as if you actually put some time and thought into them with care towards others.

At any rate, I’m a health conscience eater who prefers to eat vegetables over meats, but still eats chicken/turkey/fish. No red meat or pork.
About 70 to 80% of my food intake is organic.
Initially, I felt a bit sickened thinking about the blood mulch you referenced being used to grow the organic fruits and vegetables, but then I soon came back to my senses in realizing that it’s the most basic form of this earth’s naturally derived self-renewing energy.
Picture man and/or woman walking this earth eating the plants and vegetables as he and she travels this earth, living healthily, but still aging, slowing down, and eventually finding a place to slow down and die.
That man and/or woman is then reclaimed by the earth as its fertilizer to regrow the plants and vegetables that will feed following generations and continue to cycle on and on and on.

I think that by supporting veganically grown food you’re supporting the reversal of nature’s own cycle and trying to force something on the earth that is already working itself out. In a way, when you support veganically grown food, you support forced fruit and vegetable canabilsm and the destruction of earth’s natural self-sustaing life cycle. That doesn’t sound responsible. You should put in just as much time to think about the fruits and vegetables you eat as you do the animals you don’t.
