Yes Men Parody Exxon in Calgary

A group called the Yes Men impersonated oil execs at the world’s largest oil conference, held in Calgary, Alberta (yes, the very shit-city that I hail from) in 2007, apparently. Maybe it’s bullshit but I think it’s hilarious anyway. The group apparently revealed a new energy source called Vivoleum, which, like Soylent Green, uses the dead bodies of human beings. Awesome.

If you weren’t aware, there’s some shit going down in Alberta over the Athabasca Tar Sands - the most environmentally devastating oil acquisition project in the world. The Tar Sands are, if you were wondering, the reason Canada has rescinded its promise to meet Kyoto Protocol targets; our Prime Minister, one Stephen Harper, has promised Mr W Bush that Canada will more than double oil output from the Tar Sands in order to supply the USA with fuel.

Someone tell me why anyone thought this was a good idea?

music head

I moved back to Vancouver last Saturday - so, the eighth March - and yeah, I’m super happy to be back. Started my new job on Tuesday, after the interview on Monday, and I’m settling in… and I’ve moved in with the lovely Amanda - who is one of the only people I know who is just as strange as I am, just as childish and adventurous. I love her.

Boyskout have been in my head all day long. Maybe because this morning before I went to work I listened to this song twice. (Also, watching the video for “You Act Strange” makes me want to cut my hair off. Anyone?)

Tonight’s Midnight Mass, a twice-monthly nighttime group ride here in Vancouver… and as I just got my bicycle back from the lovely Miss Kreeli, who was babysitting it for me - well, I really ought to go, don’t you think?

If you’re reading this in time, and you’re not the night ride type, you really ought to go to OMG WTF at The Modern. Or maybe next Thursday, or any Thursday really… but especially tonight because it’s an I GLOVE MICHAEL JACKSON party.

Next week: F**k Off and Dance.

Until then…

Sweet Strings, Aching Bones

Currently digging the Calgary local music scene. There’s some amazing bands that I hadn’t heard of before I came back here, and the community seems really tight and really supportive. If you’re into the same sort of sweet indie stuff that I like, check out The Consonant C, Woodpigeon, and The Neighbourhood Council. I’m told that my current music crush, Raphaelle, is a member of that last band.

Oh - and while you’re here, here’s some love for fellow Calgarian-cum-Vancouverite Jacqueline Bell of A Relative Distance. Buy her CD!
